Amazon.com essential video: Before he became an overrated filmmaker, Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) was a reporter for Rolling Stone who was so youthful looking that he could go undercover for a year at a California high school and write a book about it. He wrote the script for this film, based on that book, and it launched the careers of several young actors, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and, above all, Sean Penn. The story line is episodic, dealing with the lives of iconic teen types: one of the school's cool kids, a nerd, a teen queen, and, most enjoyably, the class stoner (Penn), who finds himself at odds with a strict history teacher (a wonderfully spiky Ray Walston). This is not a great movie but very entertaining and, for a certain age group, a seminal movie experience. --Marshall Fine

- Number #2 in my list of teen movies: You can't call yourself a teenager if you haven't see Fast Times at Ridgemont High . The film is required viewing for teens of the eighties, nineties, seventies or any time period. Cameron Crowe made a film that teens can relate that still stands the test of time. I would love to go to Ridgemont and hang out with Spocolit, Brad Hamltion & Mike Damone. I would also love to get Linda Barret and Stacy Hamltion in the sack. For their nude scenes the film gets a 10.
- An American Teen Classic: Yes, I am one of those 30 something individuals that think this movie is awesome. Other movies of this genre are 16 candles, The Breakfast club, Pretty in Pink etc.. This is a highly recommended movie that I don't will disappoint you. An original 80's classic.

- Great Classic Movie: Sean Penn saying "Hey, dude" is enough reason to watch this gem. I'm currently reading the Fast Times at Ridgemont High book and the movie is soooo close! It's fun to see Nic Cage, Judge Reinhold (after Stripes), Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eric Stoltz, Forest Whitaker and more before they became famous. Yes, it touches on sensitive subjects, but overall, it isn't smutty or dirty as others such as Porky's and such have mastered. It's touching and you root for everyone, even Damone.
Take a couple hours off and remember or find out what the late '70s/early '80s really were like! - Not the best teen comedy.: Fast Times at Ridgement High is a bit over-rated probably because of all the nudity and sex but the cast makes up for the rauchiness. Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage, and Forest Whitaker have great roles in this comedy and Amy Heckerling is a fun and modern director but this movie doesn't stay with me for some reason. Ray Walston is hilarious as the teacher, his banter with Sean Penn is my favorite part. This movie is good but not great, just watch it for Sean Penn's airhead loving performance.
