Media Type: DVDAmazon.com: A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, Jungle Book tells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators, Jungle Book captivates audiences of all ages.

This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making of The Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure of The Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful. --Tami Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

  • Limited Issue Dvd Is so much better than this new one: I have the limited issue of this dvd. Then i bought the new one and sent it back. They made this dvd into widescreen and ruined the entire movie. They chopped of the heads of some of the character's.Give this dvd a One -
  • STILL GREAT FAMILY FUN AFTER 40 YEARS: I saw this movie in the theater 11 times; more than any other movie. In 1967 this movie totally captivated me. I even fell in love with the little Indian girl at the end of the film. And after purchasing this DVD, I'm still crazy about it 40 years later. Some of the catchiest tunes ever, and way ahead-of-its-time animation. Everyone in the family will love this Kipling and Disney classic.
  • A Classic - aesthetic and narrative wise!: This is one of the nicest stories ever told and pictured. The animal's characters are live-like and typical. The music/songs reflect the characteristics of the animals in an adorable way and are real catchy songs.
It is amusement for the whole family.
    I highly recommend this classic!
  • Fun movie!: Great for all ages! I bought this for my grandaughters. They have a great time watching this movie. A classic that will never get old.
  • Great Classic - chopped version - for the new generation: Well, yes, that's true. This is one of the great classics ever produced. I already own the original version in full frame on DVD. The reason that I gave this 4 stars is simply because they cropped the movie from top and bottom to make it widescreen. It's not true that you won't see the characters heads. Yes, you lose a little from the picture, but then so you do if you play the full frame version on a widescreen TV and you set the TV to "widezoom" instead of 16:9, because if you set the TV to 16:9 you will see everything "flat". So you need to set it to a more normal aspect ratio, which in the Sony case it's called "widezoom", Philips has the "Zoom 16:9" and "Zoom 14:9", others have other names for that setting. When you watch the movie like that, in order to fill the entire screen, you will lose from top and bottom on a full frame movie.
However, with this movie, they didn't simply just cut the movie from top and bottom. They did an entire re-working of the film, where they take it frame by frame and they cut from top and bottom where there's unimportant stuff on the screen. In other words, if you have a scene where the character is shown more on the top of the screen, and you have a rock or grass, or something else on the bottom, then they will cut only from the bottom enough so that it fits on a widescreen frame. In other scenes, they will cut accordingly, so that you won't lose essential stuff that must be seen.
Therefore, if you're trying to make a decision whether or not you should replace your original, full-frame DVD of this movie with this new widescreen version, I guess it all comes down to how much of a movie buff you are. If you really really love a classic, an original, then you will stick to the original full frame if you already have it. If you just want to own a copy of this movie, and you own a widescreen TV and you adore new technology, then I suggest that you buy this new version. They made it to fit just that profile.
Me - I already own the original full-frame DVD. I've watched it on my widescreen TV and it looks fine.
