Customer Reviews:
- Good DVR: I have had this for a little more than a month now and I really like it. I have had no problem recording primetime shows or anything else. Of course, it is not like TIVO, but what is? I think it is a great alternative. I will tell you that it is really hard going back to this after TIVO, though. However, I really like this little gadget.
- good, but has minor flaws: The device does what it says it will do, but there is one misleading pitch that Philips gives (at least it was misleading to me). The USB input will read photos off of things like key chain flash drives. However, you can't transfer the photos to DVD or the HDD. About every digital camera already comes with a cable that lets you view the photos on the camera on the TV, so what is the point of having the USB input? Another thing I don't like is that the device always "checks" the DVD tray when it comes on. Sounds like a reasonable thing to do, but the noise this check makes when I set the device to record at 12am always wakes me up. Also the bright blue LED is really noticeable at night in our bedroom. Like other users, I'm going to cover it with tape. In short, think twice before you put this gizmo in your bedroom.
Other than these minor annoyances, I do really like the box. But you may want to check out TiVo first. - So far, so good!: I've read a few complaints on this unit while researching for a new DVD recorder but must say, mine seems to be ok. (knock on wood) I've given it a good workout in the month I've owned it and it did all I asked of it. I love being able to record to the hard drive before commiting to a disc. I used to waste alot of discs when I would record a movie I wasn't sure I'd want to keep. Now I can watch it and if I like it, burn a copy, if not, just delete it! This is the way it should be!
The only down side is I had to buy a new TV as my old one (Sylvania) didn't have a viewing channel that would work with this. All of my old VHS & my last DVD player all operated on channel 3 but this one need to be played on a video source channel. (which most have)
As long as it lasts for a reasonable amount of time, I'll be 100% happy with it. Here's hoping... - Love this DVDR: I have had my unit for three months. If you are looking to move from a VCR and don't want the monthly fees of Tivo, cable or sat boxes this is a great choice. I don't tape a lot of programs so I don't mind the the timer set up to record. If you could program your VCR this is similiar. I love the hard drive because you don't have to worry about tapes, finding and empty one, rewinding it, labeling it etc. When you are ready to watch hit the title button and you see a bunch of miniture screens of all your recordings. As you highlight each recording box it will start to play so you can see what you have recorded.
Installation was simple. I just plugged all the cables that were hooked to my VCR to this unit and it all worked. I am going composite cables from DVDR to a 42" Plasma. Recordings playing off the hard drive are really nice. Not HDTV but close enough that I was very pleased with the quality. Zipping through commercials is fast. Some people complain the unit is noisy but mine is not.
I taped a movie for the kids. It took less than 15 min. to edit out the advertisements, and a few not so kid friendly and scenes. I then dubbed it to DVD and the kids watched it on the laptop during a recent trip.
I have no regrets!
- Philips DVDR35675H/37: good reception on an OTA antenna.. slow to pick up Digital stations when changing channels...Hard drive is a little noisy but not unacceptbale.... Have not yet burned a DVD so cannot comment on that part of the recorder.
Digital tuner gives one a LOT more stations than one gets with a normal NTSC tuner when using an OTA antenna.
Wife finds it complex to set up recorder as compared to a Sony VCR. One just has to get use to this tho as it is a HD and DVR in one unit.
