A Refined, Slimmer Look
The HD-A30's refined design--with rounded edges, a slim chassis, and a high-gloss black face plate--looks sleek and elegant in your home theater system without taking up too much real estate.

Outstanding Performance
All of Toshiba's HD DVD players support the enhanced features of the HD DVD format, including picture-in-picture video, audio commentary, and Web-enabled network capabilities. With an Ethernet port, the A30 can connect to the Internet for firmware updates to keep the player up to date on new features, and to support the growing number of HD DVD titles with interactive online features and bonus content.

The HD-A30 uses the latest HDMI 1.3 interface to connect to your HD television, providing large bandwidth to eliminate any data bottlenecks and to support new technologies for the utmost in viewing experience. The HD-A30 can output video at 1080p, the highest resolution available, and includes support for 24-frame video, which maintains the native 24-frames-per-second rate of films, thereby delivering an experience more similar to one in theaters.

If you have a large collection of standard definition DVDs, the HD-A30 will upconvert them to near-HD quality for display on your HD television. Progressive scan output means the scan-lines of interlaced video are eliminated and the result is a clean image that has no motion distortion or artifacts. In addition to 1080p, the HD-A30 also outputs at 720p and 1080i if desired.

Sparkling Surround Sound
The HD-A30 supports most surround sound audio standards, with built-in decoding for Dolby TrueHD 5.1ch, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1ch, DTS 5.1, and DTS HD (core only).

One-Touch Convenience
You can use the CE-Link (HDMI-CEC) to connect the HD-A30 with other CEC-capable devices for unsurpassed simplicity and convenience. For example, if the HD-A35 is connected to a compatible HDTV, you can turn on both the HD DVD player and the TV and start playing a movie with a single touch of a button on the remote.

Customer Reviews:

  • Bit the dust after 5 months: This player was problematic almost from the get-go, I only paid $130 for it last November, turns out it wasn't worth even that low price. The first issue? I would have to close the disc tray 4 or 5 times before it would stay closed. Then, after about 5 months it would no longer read discs. Very poor quality on this machine, plus HD-DVD lost the war. I dusted off my 7 year old JVC player, plugged it in, and it is in every way the Toshiba's equal plus it actually works perfectly after all these years.
  • Warehouse Deals by Amazon: I'm sure this could've been a great player as to all the reviews had mentioned. Unfortunately the Warehouse Deals store send me a DOA unit, after stamping it as refurbished. It was heavily dented and loose parts moving/rattling around inside, turned on once and froze since. I don't think they even did fixed the unit to begin with, just shipped in it's defective state, so buyers beware of all refurbished items form this Warehouse store. Shame on Amazon!
  • Very good DVD player: I bought this DVD player about three months ago and so far it has
been working very good. I sent out the request for the free 5 HD DVD offer
and a couple of days ago I received them with only 2 movies being what I
had asked for and the other 3 were a couple of lame movies.

I think Toshiba as a token of appreciation for their customers and if
they want to be trusted and taken seriously for any of their other future
products, should release a firmware release that adds a couple of
essential features such as playing VCDs and picture DVD/CDs.

Also a general note about hidef DVDs (Blue Ray and HD), 95% of the time
you'll not see a noticeable picture quality improvement over SD so I
don't recommend buying a Blu Ray player at their current rediculous prices.

    Pros:
    Great upconversion quality

    Cons:
Missing some basic functionalities such as playing VCD and picture DVDs.
    very slow start up time.
  • Toshiba HD-A30 player: The customer service was excellent, I am very satisfied with that. But I found that DVD eject operation was taking unusually long time with this product.
  • Good upscaler: I took my $50 gift card from Best Buy for the 360 HD DVD player to the store today expecting to get an upscaling standard DVD player. Rather than sink $400 into a blu-ray player, I figure upscaling would be good enough for me for quite a while. Instead I bought this since it upscales and plays my HD DVDs, keeping me from having to throw away "obsolete" disks. For $70, this thing does a great job!
