Customer Reviews:

  • Awesome Machine: I bought this as a transport a 192kHz 2 channel audio DAC. This machine will output 192kHz audio via it audio digital output. Well, I just love it. Picture is terrific. Couldn't be more happy.
  • One glitch spoils the magic: I wish I could give the Oppo 980 a perfect score. Amazon did its usual quick and professional delivery - and I hastily set up the player in my listening room. It's paired with a NAD receiver and B&W speakers.
The setup went without a hitch. Playing DVD movies and a Diana Krall concert simply blew me away in sight and sound.
But then I got out some of my favorite redbook CDs - and that's where the trouble started. Insert the disc and hit "play," and after a pause - WHAT? The player cut off the first note or even half-note on track #1 before settling down. Disc after disc - same problem.
At first I thought I'd done something wrong - but then I e-mailed the Oppo service department, and got a near-instant reply. They said the 980 players all do that - and that they do not have a solution at the moment.
I thought of returning it to Amazon - but decided to wait, in hopes of a firmware upgrade from Oppo. Please, Oppo, Fix This Problem!
Aside from that, I love the Oppo 980.
  • I would buy it again.: I was not familiar with Oppo before, but a review on CNET and user reviews on Amazon convinced me to try it. Oppo's customer service was great. I told them about my plasma display device and they recommended the 980, although I was prepared to buy the 981. When I hooked it up and put in a DVD my younger brother was there who is also into his gadgets. His reaction to the picture was WOW and he has a nice setup. A day or two later he was telling a friend about my DVD player and mentioned that it was a name he was not familiar with. His friend asked, "is it an Oppo?". He had one as well.
Unit came packed very well. Only issue was the remote. A lot of small buttons of a similar shape. Not bad, but nothing great. No problem, since I'll replace that with a universal. I'd buy the 980 again.
  • A great player: This is an A-1 player. It arrived well packaged and looks sleek and well manufactured. I hooked up the HDMI to my Sharp Aquos and was playing DVDs within 5 minutes of receipt. It offers complete control of various picture enhancements via the remote. You might pay a little more...but you get a LOT more for your money! This is one DVD player that is highly recommended.
  • Oppo DV 980 H: Recently the first DVD player I ever owned, a refurbished Toshiba, died an unpleasant death leaving me in the market. I don't own a HD tv, although that purchase is in the foreseeable future, and felt that the blue-ray costs were just too high to justify, even though I understand they will play regular and blue-ray discs. I did a Google search for best DVD players and came across the Oppo brand. I had never heard of it but it got great reviews as a higher end machine. I looked over several model options and the 980 seemed to fit my bill the best.
Right off the picture seemed better, even on my older sony tube machine. The sound, running through my pioneer home theater system was fantastic. The set up was a little confusing (that could be me) but not difficult. The remote works fine and the machine automatically synched to my pioneer remote as well. The only niggle I have is that occasionally the settings will reset to the factory settings for sound leaving me with no sound. The first time this happened I freaked out by once I figured out the problem it was easy to fix. As a note this has only happened a couple of time.
Overall a great machine which I would buy again in a blink.
