Product Description: The musical debut from M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel. They were put together by director Martin Hayens to perform the Richard and Linda Thompson tune "When I Get To The Border" for his film "The Go-Getter". Their match sparked the idea for "Volume One". Embracing the warm sound of early analog recordings, this is more than just a showcase for Zooey's rich and endearing voice; it's a distinctive and endlessly charming album. Includes coupon for free MP3 download of the album.Amazon.com: Some of us first fell in love with Zooey Deschanel's distinctive and charming voice when she crooned, "Baby it’s cold outside," with Will Ferrell in their 2003 movie, Elf. Then, in concert last summer, M.Ward invited Deschanel to the stage, where they effortlessly created the equivalent of musical utopia. In their first recorded collaboration as She & Him, Deschanel and Ward strike the same sincerity with his nostalgic production and her retro resonance. Cover songs such as "You Really Got a Hold on Me," previously performed by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, gain a newfound heartache and undeniable splendor. Bring on Volume 2. --Amanda MacKinnon

Customer Reviews:

  • good: While this is a very very solid effort by Zooey Deschanel and Him, there is somethig a bit too coy about it. It is splendidly done. It also really translates well on vinyl with the added warmth of that medium. However, as somebody wrote, this is really californian laidback songwriting at its best ad worst. I would give it 5 stars really but something bothers me a lot. She is pretty, an actress and also has music as a side-hobby.....this once mroe seems too good to be true. So we will wait for volume 2 to decide if she (and Him) are worthy of 5 stars.
  • Awesome & expeact from Zoe!: I knew she could sing but write songs! Woa. This is an amazing album-artistically speaking. Its a bit too country for my taste but i cherish it because Zoe has an amazing voice. I have following her, her voice and her acting since she came to the screen. I"m really proud of her and think this is really very good. If your a fan, you'll like this. If not you might want to borrow this from a friend.
  • Hey: "It rarely makes any sense, as is the case here. I mean, who actually sits on a shelf?"

"Sitting an a shelf" is a common metaphorical phrase! As in, "no one got to listen to that track- it was put on the shelf (or "it was shelved") instead of being released." Good track though, eh?
  • Classic: Her voice and the music is a thowback to when music was real and natural. Excellent experience!
  • if I could give it 10 stars I would: I could count the number of female voices I enjoy on one hand and still have fingers left over. But Zooey Deschanel is one of those voices. I have tried to categorize this group but I can't. Zooey's voice is achingly soulful at times, childishly playful at others, and sometimes has a bit of a country twang. In my opinion she could sing just about any song and make it delightful. Every song on this album is a gem! I can't pick a favorite but I go around singing Why Do You Make Me Stay Here all the time. I was surprised to see that Zooey wrote all but three of the songs. This girl has talent! I'm giddy awaiting future releases.
