Amazon.com: So what's with the title here? Does Eric Clapton, lamely disguised as x-sample, seriously believe he can bolster retail with an album of bogus high-tech and Deep Forest-style instrumentals? Minus Simon Climie's synth orchestrations, Clapton's multi-faceted playing would be palatable at the least. But Climie's heavy-handed stabs at contemporary dance make this the funniest and/or saddest superstar bust since Paul McCartney's relatively innocuous Fireman project in '94. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

  • TDF: This is one of the best relatively unknown Eric Clapton works out there. A bit of semi-anonymous experimentation on his part that succeeds at times forcefully and aggressively and at others with Clapton's classic slow hand guitar lyricism and rarely, if ever, lapses into an experiment better looked back upon in retrospect as an ill-considered learning experience that at best should be stored away amongst his unpublished basement tapes as a lesson for a better try next time. There's some hard, tough, loud playing on this that works powerfully strongfully and makes you feel the need to buy a high-wattage new stereo system so you can fully appreciate its forcefulness as well as that tender guitar lyricism he's so capable of. This one is definitely worth buying and keeping and listening to again and again in spite of a few decided weak spots where I find that it, despite God's now significantly advanced age, lapses into what I can best term as superficial gimmickry or even immaturity. 90% of this album succeeds magnificently to my mind. That's the best I can do off the cuff for anyone out there reading this.
  • Impressed: I stumbled on to this album looking for anything with Eric Clapton playing his guitar. I like all kinds of music so it wouldn't matter what he picked to play. I think its a great mix and different for him. I love it, because it is different. He can do no wrong!!!
  • LOVE IT!!: One of the challenges of being Eric Clapton is that you were so good in 1966 or 1970 you aren't allowed to grow up. As a long-time Clapton fan (and about his age) I have noticed that whenever he does something that doesn't sound like "Layla" he gets crummy reviews. Ignore this reviewer. "Retail Therapy" is a creative adventure in exciting, experimental, powerful music. After I got past my "this is Clapton?" reaction I fell in love with this CD and has been playing in my car virtually non-stop. I hope Eric continues to spread his musical wings. He has created his own genre with this one!
  • Give It A Few Listens: This album is a departure for Eric Clapton, listed on the album with the mysterious and unnecessary pseudonymn, x-sample, and despite being a critical and commercial flop, I found it to be a quite enjoyable album to listen to. Thats because I have my own opinion and don't listen to what the critics or others say, I recommend keeping an open mind on this one. This is an eclectic album with a mix of techno, new world, and various other kinds of music not normally associated with Eric Clapton. His guitar sears and soars on 'Sno god' and 'Seven'. Nothing wrong with trying something a little different for a change of pace. A used copy of this album is very affordable so try it and give it a couple of listens before deciding about it.
  • Buy this, if you enjoy relaxing, passionate music: I was blown away when I just found out that this was a Eric Clapton Project and kinda wish I didn't find out. I have enjoyed this CD for many years and have shared it with many people that only knows this as "TDF" (not E.C.) I think this is a terrific CD for the fact that I don't get bored from the music and I find It to be something I listen too often. This is one release that I'm not swayed by who is playing the music, but am swayed by the music itself. E.C., If you are wanting to know I hope there are more releases put out like this!
